Raised by her mother who worked a series of menial jobs, took up with a series of menial men and was basically distant, Zoe took refuge in books.
She settled on paleontology and worked her way through high school and graduate school with whatever jobs she could get while her brilliance and focus put her on the scholastic fast track. When she went off to school, her nose came out of her books and she began taking more interest in the world around her. She took up hiking, climbing and survivalism as hobbies.
She currently is an assistant manager of a tiny bookstore near the college she’s a graduate student at. She’s assistant researcher to a professor there and is paid accordingly while granted sufficient freedom to pursue her own scientific work. Zoe works hard, minimizes expenses and depends on grants and such. She’s not in heavy debt, due to those, scholarships and her own hard work and frugality.
She’s friendly but avoids serious interpersonal relationships (especially with men), refusing to even keep a cat (she has a goldfish named Ellie and this is the fifth goldfish she’s had—Alice, Beatrix, Crystalline Matrix and Dina being the others). She maintains loose contact with her mother in NYC, calling a couple times a year.
She has an inner spontaneity that she keeps as far under wraps as possible, feeling that she doesn’t have time for that sort of thing. She’s a bit of a dunce when it comes to popular entertainment and witty repartee for the same reason. She will either curl up with a book, write a paper or do some outdoor activity as opposed to what passes for fun with her colleagues.
Zoe’s been published several times and invited to lecture once. She specializes in vertebrates. Her education focused on biology but she knows a fair bit about geology as well and her tiny apartment (which isn’t in the best part of town) is filled with stones and small unimportant fossils.
She tends toward cheerfulness, speaks French and German and has been out of the country a few times (on educational/working trips). She has a driver’s license but doesn’t own a car (she does own a bicycle), not least because she’d rather spend her hard earned money elsewhere. She uses her apartment building’s laundromat.
She drinks wine occasionally and enjoys good and healthy food. Her preferred breakfast drink is cocoa, and she prefers tea to coffee and is the type that brings her own in a thermos and would even if money were no issue at all.
